MAISON SAMZUN | BELLE ILE, FRANCE

Belle Île, the ‘beautiful island’ off the Brittany coast has long been a holiday destination due to its seclusion, natural beauty and savage, wind-swept landscape. Taking cues from the surroundings, the design features of this new home celebrates the feeling of being perched on the edge of oceanside cliff with light, airy interiors while being protected by a steadfast stone fortress. The common spaces feature open volumes that are light and bright, while private spaces are compact and cozy. The materials and finishes take cues from the muted hues of wind-swept landscape and the texture of the historic architecture.

The ubiquitous architectural style of the region is stringently protected and governed by local regulation. The pitch of the roof, shape of the windows, use of shutters, material selections and color palette are largely predetermined.  The traditional architecture allows expression of individual style through color of window shutters and frames. When open, a bright blue shutter articulates a welcome gesture against a white wall. MAISON SAMZUN reinterprets that gesture through the use of wall niches where the shutters can nest in the open and closed position. When open, the shutter nests into the niche; in the closed position, the shutter reveals a twin wooden panel fixed within the niche. Together they express a long horizontal form on the face of the wall.
